Center for Migration and Labor Market Research

Established in July 2012, the Center for Migration and Labor Market Research aims to study the issues which are of important policy implications and social significance in the immigration and urbanization in China based on data and the latest quantitative methods.

Now the Center is implementing the following researches:

1. The research on the education of the migrant children. The focus is the institutional barriers and intergradation problems for the migrants when they are in the inflow areas. The research is mainly on the determinants of the education of the migrant children. This project is supported by the Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC). In 2010 and 2012 respectively, about 3000 students and their parents took part in the survey and standardized tests conducted by us. Based on this, we initially established a database tracking the migrant children in the long run. According to the prophase research results of the Center, the schools play the most important role in influencing the children's academic performance. Therefore, the follow-up research will keep focusing on the influence of different schools, i.e., migrant schools or public schools, on the education of migrant children.

2. The research on the determinants for the immigration of rural residents to urban areas. We have conducted three large-scale tracking survey projects in 2007, 2009 and 2012 respectively. About 800 rural households are involved. After the Wenchuan earthquake in 2008, we studied how the peasants dealt with the unfavorable factors such as natural disasters through immigration and working in the cities. Now the Center is conducting the project of "Urban and rural population flow and the circulation of rural land market", which focuses on the agricultural mechanization and the dynamic relationship between the farm land market development and non-agricultural working.
